The Bowen Technique Emergency Asthma Move
The Bowen Asthma Emergency Procedure is part of the Respiratory Procedure. It is quick to administer. In a full attack, the stomach and chest appear to collapse in wards because of the Diaphragm going into full spasm. Most asthma sufferers can use this move instead of Ventolin. If this move fails to relieve the symptoms, it is perfectly all right to then use the reliever spray.
1.In a major asthma attack always ring 999 and ask for an ambulance.
While waiting for help to arrive, the following procedure often produces immediate relief.
In a full attack, the person may not be able to breathe out at all.
At all times try to remain calm, as the victim will be very anxious.
2. To release the full spasm of the diaphragm, find the bottom of the breastbone. Just below it is the very sensitive Xiphoid Process just under the skin (small children may not yet have a fully developed Xiphoid Process).
3. Place a thumb about one inch below the Xiphoid Process in the soft "stomach" area.
4. Gently push the skin up (towards the heart) about 1-inch.
5. Apply a small amount of pressure inwards, then
6. Pull the thumb down (towards the navel) moderately quickly and firmly to release the spasm.
This should release the spasm immediately allowing the air to be released from the lungs.
If no changes are seen you may repeat the above move.
Note: You can use this procedure gently to release light spasms of the Diaphragm when the child is just a bit wheezy. This often helps and can be done several times. It is important to only use a small amount of pressure when it is not a full attack and the Diaphragm is only slightly in spasm.
